Compass – A Bioclimatic School in Crete by Officetwentyfive Architects

Award-Winning Design Merges Mythology, Modernity, and Multiculturalism

The Compass school complex is a striking architectural feat that stands out for its innovative design and thoughtful integration of cultural elements. The school's shape, reminiscent of an arrow, is a tribute to the mythological journey of God Zeus and Europe, symbolizing the path that the students will follow towards their future in Europe. The white color of the building, engraved with European alphabets, signifies the school's international character and its commitment to unity and integration.

One of the unique features of the design is the use of clay louvers, a traditional craft in the region, which have been painted white to align with the school's international aesthetic. This clever design choice not only reduces maintenance but also revives a dying local art form, subtly blending tradition with modernity. The symbols from the 'disk of Phaistos', the first written text in Europe, are also incorporated into the design, instilling a sense of pride in the students about their rich cultural heritage.

The Compass school complex, spanning a total area of 7500 m², was designed with the students' needs and experiences in mind. The kindergarten is centrally located, protected by the wings of the school building, creating a secure and introverted environment for the young children. The primary and secondary schools have been designed to offer the students the right balance of independence and security, with direct access to outdoor spaces and controlled entry-exit points.

One of the key challenges faced by the design team was to create a school that would be attractive to its users, especially the children. The school is located in an olive grove, and the designers have used local plants in the gardens to offer the city-dwelling children an enriching experience with nature. The transition from indoor to outdoor spaces is seamless, fostering a close connection with the natural surroundings.

The Compass school complex by Officetwentyfive Architects is a testament to the power of design in shaping educational spaces that are not only functional and attractive but also deeply rooted in their cultural context. The design was awarded the prestigious Platinum A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2013, recognizing its exceptional innovation and contribution to societal wellbeing.
